Well water drawn by pumps and raised mechanically typically contain more minerals than surface water and may require treatment to soften the water.

The upper part of the well is lined with a casing to prevent the collapse of the borehole wall, as well as to prevent surface or subsurface contaminants from entering the water supply and provide a housing for the pumping mechanism and pipe.
